The Karuta project, under the umbrella of the Apereo Foundation, is pleased to announce the release of version 2.3 of the Karuta Open Source Portfolio. Adopted by an increasing number of institutions, Karuta offers a simple and flexible way for portfolio designers to customize portfolio workflows for learning, assessment, reporting, and showcasing. This sixth release of Karuta has undergone extensive testing and incorporates many new features to enrich the portfolio experience.

Functionalities

  • Export. Users can now export their portfolio in a ZIP/HTML format with all the files included. RTF export is also supported.
  • Bubble-map. Users can now create a visual summary of the content of their portfolio by adjusting the number size and color of the elements of a bubble-map. Outside users can access this bubble-map using a unique QR code.
  • Help is now managed using a form (instead of an email).
  • +/- status. The open/closed status of subsections, sections, and pages is kept in memory so users have more control of the ways they want to access the content of their portfolios
  • Large portfolios. To speed up the process of displaying large portfolios, designers can use the option of initially uploading only the main sections of a portfolio.

Advanced functionalities - Menu

  • Get_multiple. It is now possible to choose multiple elements from a list (instead of only one).
  • Import_multiple. Likewise, it is possible to import multiple elements from a list.
  • Import_ggmultiple. This is a very powerful new feature for rubrics. Assuming the existence of several complementary rubrics, a user can now choose one specific rubric and import all the relevant sections to be included in his or her portfolio.

Technical - batch

  • BatchForm. New users and new portfolios can be created using a simple form instead of using the batch CSV files.
  • The batch script can now process the following instructions: DeletePerson, JoinPortfolioGroup, MoveUp, UpdateMetadata.
  • In a batch, it is now possible to open/close (+/- ) subsections, sections, and pages when editing the portfolio script.

Technical - report

  • ShowSharing. Reports can display all the users with whom any of the portfolios in the system have been shared.
  • For-each-portfolio – Sort. Portfolios can be sorted alphabetically by any element.
  • WebDisplay (star). Desired data can now be displayed using a spider or radar type graph instead of a traditional HTML table.
  • Export IMG. The image of a report can be downloaded.
  • Autorefresh of calculated variables. The content of a calculated variable (such as a sum) can be refreshed within a report.
  • The QR Code from a Bubble Map can be displayed within a report.

Technical - Metadata

  • CSS in Root element. It is possible to customize the css for an entire portfolio.
  • New options for Code attribute. There are more options for the display of code, label and/or value of Items in a choice box, in the getResource element, and in a dashboard.

Karura is currently used in production at more than ten institutions. Benefits of Karuta include:

Karuta is Simple. Teaching and learning (T&L) designers can quickly build portfolio workflows by creating pages, adding different resources (text, document, comments, rubrics, oEmbed resources, bubble-maps, email, etc.), and assigning their use to various roles (student, instructor, evaluator, etc.).

Karuta is Flexible. Karuta has no a priori structure. The T&L designer has full control and can build sophisticated portfolio workflows and reports with a minimum of training. No code development is required. All types of portfolios are supported (learning, assessment, showcase, presentation, etc.).

Karuta is Iterative. Karuta is built for quick review and revision. Design a portfolio, test it in faculty meetings, make changes, run a small pilot with students, check the data in reports.

Karuta is Powerful. Karuta has advanced features for creating rubrics, user menus, summary pages, forms, help, reports, sharing, and peer evaluation.

Karuta is Mobile Device Ready. Karuta is responsive design-ready and can be displayed on computers, tablets, or smartphones.

Karuta is Multilingual. Karuta can support many languages and has already been set up for English, French, and Japanese. Language customization can be accomplished quickly. A special version of Karuta supports portfolios with multilingual interface commands and forms, images, or documents made available in a chosen language.
